Safe Bulkers sells oldest vessel as part of renewal strategy

New York-listed Greek dry bulk owner Safe Bulkers has entered into an agreement to sell the oldest vessel in its fleet.

The company said that it sold the 2004 Japanese-built, 76,015-dwt Katerina panamax bulker at a gross sale price of $10.2m.

Safe Bulkers did not reveal the buyer of the vessel but did state that it would be delivered within December 2023.

“MV Katerina, the oldest vessel in our fleet was sold as part of our renewal strategy. The company’s remaining orderbook includes eight more Phase 3 newbuilds, two of which are methanol dual fuel, to be delivered by the first quarter of 2027, targeting one of the most environmentally efficient dry bulk fleets in the market,” Loukas Barmparis, president of Safe Bulkers, said.

It is worth noting that one of the newbuilds will be delivered this year while three will arrive in 2024, two in 2025, one in 2026, and the final one in the first quarter of 2027.
