Statoil cancels its contract on Maersk Drilling rig, Total takes over

Statoil has cancelled its charter of Maersk’s jack-up drilling rig Maersk Gallant six months earlier than expected, but the contract has been picked up by Total E&P Norge.

Statoil’s contract on the rig commenced in August 2014 and was due to terminate this August, according to Maersk Drilling’s latest fleet update. Since October 9, the rig has been sub-chartered to ConocoPhillips.

Maersk Gallant began a new contract for Total E&P Norge from February 14, which will run until and August 21 this year, the Norwegian state oil and gas company said. Total will pay cancellation fee according to the former contract.

Maersk Drilling said the contract cancellation and new charter “will be financially neutral” to the company.

The 1993-built drilling rig has been employed in the North Sea since it was commissioned in 1993.
