Svitzer orders two more tugs

Svitzer has ordered two more tugs from Sanmar Shipyard in Turkey that will be deployed in Australia at the Port of Darwin to support the Ichthys LNG Project.

The two vessels will be employed alongside two existing vessels to assist LNG, LPG and condensate carriers at the Port of Darwin from late 2017, when the two newbuildings are scheduled for delivery.

The new vessels themselves will be 80-tonne bollard pull RAstar 2800 terminal tugs with escort ability and accommodation for 10 crew.

The vessels will be equipped with render/recovery winch, aft winch, FIFI 1 and LNG package, Svitzer said today.

As well as for use in towage, the tugs have been designed to be deployed quickly to deal with emergencies and environmental incidents; fire-fighting, support work during maintenance on INPEX’s marine infrastructure, and salvage operations within the port.

“Sanmar Shipyards was chosen for their outstanding safety performance, construction quality and competitive price,” Svitzer commented.
