Tsipras calls for further Chinese maritime investment

Greek prime minister Alexis Tsipras has used his state visit to China to try and drum up more maritime investments, hot on the heels of China Cosco Shipping sealing a deal to take over Greece’s largest port, Piraeus.

Tsipras spoke to CCTV, China’s national, state-run television station, and revealed: “We’re specifically interested in investments from Chinese in Greek shipyards which will be used by Chinese ships for repairs.”

He also said he’d welcome further Chinese investment in other Greek ports. The Mediterranean nation’s ports are being privatized in a bid to get cash into the credit-constrained country.

Tsipras also discussed plans to strengthen railway construction with a view to shift cargoes from Piraeus port to Central Europe.
