Two dead after bulker catches fire at CSSC Chengxi Shipyard

A 64,000dwt bulk carrier under construction at CSSC Chengxi Shipyard caught fire yesterday, leading to the death of two shipyard workers.

The local fire department was called and managed to contain the fire after five hours. According to a source at the shipyard, the incident was caused by diesel leakage near high temperature operations.

The vessel, Atlas Limassol, was ordered by Greek owner Dalnave and was undergoing outfitting work.

The shipyard has suspended all shipbuilding operations while safety checks are carried out.
