Kanal Istanbul project takes shape

Istanbul: Turkey’s plans are taking shape for construction of the Kanal Istanbul, an artificial waterway built to bypass the Bosporus Strait.

The construction and zoning plans have been released for the Kanal project, which aims to aims to minimise shipping traffic on the Bosporus.

The Ministry of Environment and Town Planning will issue building permits once construction plans have been completed and approved.

The Kanal Istanbul will be built on the European side of the Turkish capital, effectively making Istanbul an island. The canal will connect the Black Sea to the Sea of Marmara, leading to the Aegean and Mediterranean seas.

The project is scheduled for completion in 2023, which will mark theTurkish Republic’s 100th anniversary.

Mayor of Istanbul Kadir Topbaş will issue construction plans for the new town that will be built on the canal basin, Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality’s Urban Planning Directorate told Turkish press.

In the meantime, the land and environmental conditions will be assessed by a team of experts.
