Restrictions at Panama Canal this weekend due to maintenance work

The east lane of Gatun Locks at the Panama Canal will be out of service to vessels for 12 hours of maintenance on the locks this weekend, the Panama Canal Authority (ACP) has announced.

The period of closure will last only from dusk to dawn on Saturday evening to Sunday morning but it will have a knock-on effect of reducing the number of booking slots available to tankers transiting the Canal on Sunday.

Maintenance tasks scheduled involve dry chamber work and other rehabilitation work on the locks.

The Canal’s $5.3bn expansion project to allow it to accept much bigger cargo ships is set for inauguration in late June.
