Big freeze brings chaos to Bohai Bay

Dalian: Ice forming in Bohai Bay has greatly affected normal operation of ships and oilfields with reports of up to 1,000 ships being stranded over the past week. The frozen seas in northern China are expected to expand in late January, creating further transport chaos.

The peak of sea ice this year might be similar to the level in 2010 when nearly 90% of Bohai Bay was frozen, the worst situation in the bay in three decades, Zhang Qiwen, a sea ice expert at the National Marine Environmental Forecasting Center told local media. [09/01/12]
