COSCO offloads cape at the second attempt

COSCO has sold a cape at a second attempt continuing an active year for the Chinese state-owned giant with a string of vintage sales.

This time it’s selling a vintage cape to Dubai’s Lila Global, the shipowning arm of recycler GMS.

In mid-March, COSCO attempted to sell the 2006-built CHS Splendor, built at IHI Marine in Japan. Sources say the price at the time was $17.5m. The ship was first fixed but sources tell Splash the Middle Eastern buyer failed to log its deposit and the ship had to re-invite offers. The same ship is now sold for $16.3m.

In another deal in March, COSCO sold another same-aged cape to Jiangsu Steamship, one of the most active buyers of vintage capes in China, who tabled $17m for the 174,000 dwt Shanghai Waigaoqiao-built, CHS Creation.
