Death sentences for Suez Canal plotters

Cairo: A total of 26 people were sentenced to death in absentia on Wednesday in Egypt for plotting attacks on ships transiting the Suez Canal, according to Reuters.

Egypt’s instability has seen Jihadists vow to attack the Suez Canal repeatedly. The most vocal and militant brigade, Al Furqan, which has links to Al Qaeda, fired an RPG on a giant Chinese containership, Cosco Asia, last September and has said it will strike again.  Since then the canal has been under a huge security cordon.
