Finland takes action to protect energy infrastructure

Following suspected sabotage of a gas pipeline linking with Estonia, Finland is taking emergency measures to protect national energy infrastructure.

Access is being restricted at part of the port of Inga, which houses one of the country’s two floating LNG terminals. In total, the Finnish government has identified 230 sites where it will restrict access over fears of Russian sabotage.

The Balticconnector gas pipeline was shut eight days ago on concerns that gas was leaking from a hole in the 77 km pipeline. Finnish operator Gasgrid said it could take months or more to repair.

“It is likely that damage to both the gas pipeline and the communication cable is the result of outside activity. The cause of the damage is not yet clear, the investigation continues in cooperation between Finland and Estonia,” Finnish president Sauli Niinisto said in a statement last week.

Last year, the Nord Stream gas pipelines under the Baltic Sea between Russia and Germany were damaged by explosions (pictured) that authorities have determined were caused by deliberate acts of sabotage.
