Jerusalem: The Israeli Internal Affairs and Environment Committee, held a meeting today, to discuss the idea of establishing a railway project to link the Mediterranean and the Red Sea. The cost of the project is expected to be around $40 billion and is being touted as the new route to link Asia with Africa.

The project may compete with Egypt's Suez Canal, and has received some strong opposition by some Israeli government ministers. The Minister of Environmental Protection, Armand Peretz, one of those who opposed to the project said that the discussions on the project were not exhaustive.

He added that the project might harm relations with Egypt, because of the potential harm it may cause to the effectiveness of the Suez Canal. [22/10/13]
