Jeddah port backlog sees fees climb

Customs clearance fees for imports into Jeddah have been hiked to 1,200 riyals from previous prices of between 600 and 700 riyals as the port struggles to handle its cargo backlog.

One of the main problems at the port is gate access for trucks; there’s one allocated for trucks’ entry and another for their exit, while another nine gates are not made available to truck drivers.

Given that Jeddah handles around two thirds of Saudi’s imports the container backlog created by this planning mishap is growing and growing.  [02/06/13]
