Liberia replaces Panama as the world’s largest flag

For the first time in 30 years Panama is no longer the world’s largest ship registry. Rival Liberia has overhauled the Central American nation in terms of gross tonnage in new data issued by Clarksons Research.

The Liberian flag now has a 2.2m gt lead over Panama at the top of the registry rankings, its fleet growing by 5.6% so far this year, according to Clarksons. In terms of the number of ships on their books, Panama retains a healthy lead of more than 3,200 ships.

Looking at the the list of the top 30 flags, the big losers in the year to date have been Malta and Cyprus, likely as a result of Russia’s war in Ukraine, while the flag that has grown the most in percentage terms by some distance has been Germany, a nation that is showing signs of having finally thrown off the maritime shackles that has dogged growth for more than a decade.

    1. Proud for the progress and work done to reach that status yes, but how we distribute and manage the funds is our greatest problem. We have to hold government accountable for every penny received and spent.

      1. How do “We hold government accountable for every penny received and spent”?

  1. It’s a significant milestone for Liberia, but what does it portend for Liberians companies and business individuals interested in this sector?

  2. Wow, it’s truly incredible and makes me feel proud that Liberia has the highest registry of flag state fleet! 🇱🇷🚢 This achievement reflects the importance of our maritime industry and the trust from international shipowners. Go Liberia

  3. Thank Jehovah God 🙏 Almighty, that indeed something good shall come from “Nazareth”, with Liberia topping Panama in the World Maritime industry.
Bravo Hon.Lenn Eugene Nagbe Commissioner General, and ‘ur hard working team!!!!

    1. Hahàhaha. Yeah we thank God but what’s something good? Is that an achievement for Liberian people or it’s just another good news without any benefits. We’re so manute in our thinking little things stirs people up you go to countries and see the vast contribution and implement their nation has carried out.

  4. It’s a reputable news for Liberia to break a Three Year Old Decade of history from Panama. Good news for the Government, how are the citizens of Liberia benefiting from it all? Is it good news and the Liberian people suffer in poverty? Maritime has been bringing in bulk of the country’s highest GDP. But they didn’t distribute and still have not distributed the wealth properly. What difference will this make? It’s time for Liberians to speak out and challenge their lawmakers for better accountability.

  5. Glad to hear something positive for mother Liberia for a change. Bravo! Maybe this bug can infect other agencies and ministries of government. This is definitely good news and a move in the right direction. You go girl!

  6. Good news for Liberia especially if proceeds from the maritime industry are used to support the domestic economy

  7. Liberia has always had the highest fleet flag@ maritime affairs until the civil war. Then it went to PANAMA. During the interim. It gave total management to the US @Quantico in Virginia, USA. WHEN I resided in the metro area..they were always trying to educate and recruit Liberians in the US to work there.

  8. This is not a strange news to me. Liberia was the highest flag ship registry in the world before the civil war. During the war, there was no trusted government which made ship owners to turn to Panama for registry. Those ships bearing the Liberian flag at sea pay the Liberian government to do so….Do you see how bad the road from Jamaica Road to Clara town is? What is the GOL doing with all the revenue they are collecting from ship owners? Corruption is at its finest.

  9. What an achievement……
Hopefully, the people of Liberia benefit from this great achievement while it last. Some good news…..
