Power companies protest Beijing coal import ban

Beijing: China’s leading five power companies have jointly protested Beijing’s draft proposal to ban the import of low-grade coal and set the entry barrier to coal importers.

The five top utilities, China Huaneng Group, China Datang Corp, China Huadian Group, China Guodian Corp and China Power Investment Corporation are protesting the draft proposal from the National Energy Administration, which would hamper their efforts to boost coal demand.

China imported 55 million tonnes of low-grade coal in 2012, mostly from Indonesia. [31/05/13]
