SBM Offshore awards contract for green recycling of Brazil-based FPSO

Dutch floater giant SBM Offshore has contracted Modern American Recycling Services (MARS) for green recycling of its 49-year-old floating production storage and offloading vessel (FPSO) Capixaba.

The FPSO is moored in 1,350 m of water in Petrobras’ Cachalote field in the Campos Basin offshore Brazil.

MARS’ contract includes engineering, preparation, dismantling and recycling of the unit, which is expected to arrive at the company’s yard in the Port of Frederikshavn in Northern Denmark at the end of 2023 or in early 2024.

The 362-m-long Capixaba was converted from the 1974-built VLCC Stena Congress at Keppel Shipyard in 2005. The vessel operated on the Golfinho field before it moved to the Cachalote field in 2010 and subsequently ceased production last year.

Earlier this month, MARS also received limited notice to proceed from Shell for green recycling of its 49-year-old FPSO Fluminense. The unit will be scrapped after 20 years in operation for Shell in the Bijupirá and Salema oil fields off Brazil.
