Shell lines up Brazilian FPSO for scrap in Denmark

Modern American Recycling Services Europe has received limited notice to proceed from Shell for green recycling of its 49-year-old floating production storage and offloading vessel (FPSO) Fluminense.

The FPSO will be scrapped after 20 years in operation for Shell in the Bijupirá and Salema oil fields in the Campos Basin off the coast of Brazil.

The unit is expected to arrive at MARS Europe in Frederikshavn in Northern Denmark in 2024 after obtaining the required approvals in compliance with local and international regulations.

MARS’ EU-approved green recycling facility in Frederikshavn was last year selected for dismantling Teekay Corporation’s 1996-built FPSO Petrojarl Foinaven and 1997-built Petrojarl Banff in 2021.

Japanese floater specialist Modec was responsible for the FPSO’s conversion from a ULCC tanker and its operation and maintenance. The vessel is capable of processing 81,000 bopd and compressing 75m cfd of natural gas.
