SE Asia’s largest maritime zone starts construction

Jakarta: The Tanggamus regency administration in Lampung has started the construction of the first phase of the Maritime Industrial Zone (KIM) project at the Batubalai Port in Rimau district. The project is expected to become the largest maritime industrial area in Southeast Asia.

“Tanggamus KIM is Indonesia’s fourth biggest shipbuilding site after Surabaya, Cilegon and Batam. The integrated KIM will be built in stages, with the first stage covering 263 hectares,” said Herman Hermawan, head of Tanggamus Development Planning Board.

“A 333-hectare area has been prepared at Batubalai Port. The project will cover a total area of over 1,000 hectares owned by state oil and gas company PT Pertamina,” he added.

The project started with the construction of a dock which will serve ships with a capacity of between 1,500 and 3,000dwt. The area will also have other port facilities including a crude oil terminal, ship recycling yard, and warehouses.

According to Herman, the project is funded by the state budget with $908,000 disbursed this year and the budget will be more than doubled in 2014. [28/06/13]
