Shipping preps for regular Panama Canal disruption

Splash Extra investigates how shippers and the authorities can best prepare for future drought conditions at the key Central American waterway.

The Panama Canal Authority (ACP) has been urged to expedite long-held plans to buy neighbouring public lands to expand its watershed area to combat future droughts that have the potential to vex global supply chains.

Draft and transit restrictions at the waterway - and resulting ship queues - have dominated the shipping news agenda this month with the ACP warning on August 24 that the water-conserving measures will be in place for at least the next 10 months.
