Worker protest at Rongsheng

Shanghai: Hundreds of workers from Rongsheng Heavy Industries gathered at the main gate of the shipyard yesterday and protested against salaries in arrears for the past three months.

An official from Rongsheng said to SinoShip News that these workers work for subcontractors and Rongsheng has already paid the subcontractors. Today the protest has stopped and the shipyard is trying to solve the matter through negotiations with the workers. “The shipyard is in the middle of a transformation, we are confident and capable of solving issues in the process of the transformation,” he added.

According to the official, Rongsheng has around 6,000 of its own workers; however, there are more than 10,000 subcontract workers from several different subcontractors.

Rongsheng suffered a loss of RMB49m in the first quarter of 2013, and company chairman Chen Qiang said in an earlier shareholder meeting that it was the most difficult time for Rongsheng from the second half last year to the first quarter of this year, however, the company’s business is stabilizing and expected to improve from the second half of 2013.
