Vietnamese crewman shot by pirates

Hanoi: A Vietnamese crewman was shot during a pirate attack on an asphalt tanker off Singapore early Sunday, and is in critical condition.

A Singapore rescue helicopter sent the unconscious crewman, Tran Duc Dat, to hospital, according to the Vietnam Marine Search and Rescue Center. Fifteen other crewmembers onboard the vessel VP Asphalt 2 are safe.

The vessel was on its way from Singapore to Go Dau port in Vietnam's sothern province of Dong Nai.

The pirates reportedly tied up all the crewmembers and robbed some of the ship's cargo. [08/12/14]
