Chittagong port expansion unveiled
Congested Chittagong, Bangladesh’s top port, is adding more terminals.
Chittagong Port Authority (CPA) has revealed plans to get three terminals completed by 2025. The new facilities include a 1,500 m long multipurpose terminal and two container terminals with 1,225 and 800 m lengths, respectively.
Currently, container vessels are getting schedule berthing within one or two days arriving at the outer anchorage of the port with the arrival of a number of new gantry cranes helping speed up operations. The turnaround time for vessels at Chittagong port was 7-8 days in 2017 when congestion reached its peak.
The port handled a record 2.9m teu last year, up 9% over 2017.
