Hamburg mourns loss of last schooner
Hamburg lost a slice of its maritime heritage on Saturday when an 809 teu, German owned boxship ploughed into the 1883-built gaff-rigged schooner Elbe No 5.
The 1883-built sailing vessel had just come out of a EUR1.5m refit when it was struck by the Astrosprinter boxship on a busy stretch of the river Elbe. Six adults and two children were injured after a failed tack steered the sailing ship directly into the containership’s path.
All 43 passengers were rescued but the 37 m long schooner sank. The white-hulled ship was Hamburg’s last remaining seagoing ship from the era of wooden vessels.
