ABB buys weather routing firm in latest maritime tech consolidation move

In a most recent move for shipping data providers, multinational tech corporation ABB has acquired the shipping business of weather and meteorological forecasting specialist DTN.

ABB acquired the shipping business of DTN Europe and DTN Philippines expanding the company’s offering in maritime software.

The acquisition of the DTN Shipping portfolio covers vessel routing software, including analytics, reporting, and modelling applications. Financial details of the transaction were not disclosed. The transaction is expected to close during the second quarter of 2024.

The company added that the DTN Shipping business will complement ABB’s existing digital offering and increase the number of vessels connected to ABB networks to over 5,000.

“With this acquisition, we can now offer all levels of digitalization, across all fleet types and sizes, creating a unique offering in vessel and voyage performance,” said Juha Koskela, Division President, ABB Marine & Ports.

This new acquisition comes only a few months after US maritime artificial intelligence firm Nautilus Labs was bought by Denmark’s data specialist Danelec.

Danelec, best known for its voyage data recorders, shaft power meters, and as a provider of systems for digital monitoring of ship performance, brought Nautilus Labs to its fold after purchasing Norwegian firm KYMA in 2021 and the VDR and MDE business of MacGregor in November 2023.
