A blaze broke out on a former Pemex oil products tanker at the TNG (Talleres Navales del Golfo) naval shipyard in the Mexican port complex of Veracruz on the Gulf of Mexico coastline.
Shipyard firefighters were quick on the scene to tackle the fire and thick smoke billowing from the 1989-built Nuevo Pemex IV.
The flames were prevented from spreading but the fire crews opted to let the fire in the engine room burn itself out. It is believed the blaze started there when a spark ignited oil waste.
No injuries were reported.
The Nuevo Pemex IV, formerly owned by Mexico’s state oil firm Pemex, had been sold to a private party and was in the TNG yard for dismantling.
Veracruz is the oldest and largest port in Mexico. TNG is a shipyard offering shipbuilding, ship repair, vessel conversions and fabrication services. It is part of the Hutchison Port Holdings Group.
