Blumenthal swoops on Japanese kamsarmax

German owner Johann MK Blumenthal has been linked to a kamsarmax bulk carrier purchase from Japan’s Nissen Kaiun.

The 82,900 dwt scrubber-fitted Lord Star, which brokers earlier this year placed in Greek hands, has now been reported to have been sold to the Hamburg-based company in a deal worth around $23.8m.

The 2013 Sanoyas-built ship should join Blumenthal’s fleet of 32 ships, mostly made up of bulkers. In November last year, the company paid $26.5m to Doun Kisen for the 81,200 dwt 2016 Tsuneishi Cebu-built Lowlands Comfort, renamed Bulldog, after picking up another two kamsarmaxes from Japanese owners a year earlier.

Similar, albeit almost 10-year younger tonnage, is rumoured to be fetching close to $10m more. Oldendorff Carriers has reportedly offloaded its 2022 Jiangsu New Hantong-built Kuno Oldendorff, VesselsValue estimates at $31.4m, in the region of $33m.

In other bulker deals, a very busy capesize market has seen Japan’s Meji Shipping sell the 2011-built 178,500 dwt AM Gijon to Nicholas Inglessis’s Alberta Shipmanagement for around $25.8m.
