Breathalyser tests mandated for all pilots in Taiwan

A pilot who was found to be drunk on the job after a containership slammed into a pier at the Port of Kaohsiung on Monday has been suspended and all maritime pilots in Taiwan will now face mandatory alcohol breathylser tests before starting work following the incident.

The 2006-built, 6,800 teu Hyundai Tokyo ploughed straight into Pier 77, causing sizeable damage to to the concrete quayside at the island’s largest port.

Port officials had noticed that the speed of the ship was too fast and sent a warning by radio before the incident occurred.
