Celsius makes $376m entry into LNG

Celsius Tankers, a unit of Danish owner Celsius Shipping, has placed an order at South Korean yard Samsung Heavy Industries for the construction of two LNG carriers.

According to Samsung Heavy, the two vessels are expected to be delivered before the end of 2020. The total value of the contract is KRW422.5bn ($376m).

The specifications of the vessels have not been disclosed.

The order marks Celsius’ entry into the LNG shipping sector. The company currently operates a fleet of 35 vessels made up of 15 bulkers, eight containerships and 12 tankers. It also has 14 chemical tankers on order at China’s Jiangsu Hantong Ship Heavy Industry.

Celsius acts as a platform for investors to come in on ship acquisition deals with a focus on specialized tonnage.
