Newcastlemax smashes into Evergreen boxship at Kaohsiung

A newcastlemax bulker operated by Taiwan’s China Steel Corporation collided with an Evergreen containership at Kaohsiung port yesterday.

Video footage of the incident shows the 206,600 dwt China Steel Innovator hit the 8,452 teu Ever Laden, which was berthed at the port, while manoeuvring.

The ore carrier dropped both anchors in an attempt to avoid the collision and a tugboat was also trying to stop the vessel, however the vessel couldn’t be stopped in time.

Both vessels and the tugboat suffered damage, although no casualities were reported in the incident.

Preliminary investigations by Kaohsiung port authority found that China Steel Innovator had difficulties in maneuvering and the vessel has now been barred from leaving the port until inspections are completed.
