Cruiseship breaks free from moorings in Mallorca, hits tanker

Massive storms across the Spanish island of Mallorca saw the Britannia, the flagship in the P&O Cruises fleet, break free from its moorings yesterday morning and drift across port, hitting the starboard side of a moored tanker called Castillo De Arteaga

Both ships suffered minor damages in the incident with some debris spotted in the harbour and tugs swiftly deployed to bring the cruiseship back to its mooring.

Passengers onboard the cruiseship described how the giant $500m vessels “floated away like a paper boat” in the storm amid torrential rain and winds of up to 120 kmh. Some passengers were treated for minor injuries.

The collision could have been worse with a nearby ferry, the GNV Spirit, escaping getting crushed by a matter of just one minute.
