Dan Marine: China gateway

Shanghai: This week has seen Marintec China take centre stage. Hundreds of overseas companies have descended upon Shanghai to try and sell their products to one of the world’s fastest growing maritime markets. Negotiating Chinese sales can be a minefield however.

Many of the companies at Marintec China have opted to use the services of Dan Marine to act as an agent in the People’s Republic.

Dan Marine is an agent for many big names around the world, as well as a shipbroker and logistics provider.

The firm’s ceo Lawrence Wang says Chinese yards are more open minded to foreign technology than Korean yards. Nevertheless, Wang is pessimistic on prospects for next year. “The market for the moment is going up now,” he says, “but next year it will go down. The charter market does not need so many vessels. Too many vessels have been ordered.”

Regardless of this, China is “hot”, Wang says and he expects future Marintecs to get busier and busier. Dan Marine has eight offices in China and three overseas in Singapore, Athens and Houston.  [04/12/13]
