Danaos boxship spills oil off the coast of Vancouver

Danaos-owned post-panamax container vessel Europe has spilled 60 to 100 litres of fuel in Vancouver’s English Bay.

The Canadian Coast Guard was informed of the spill on Saturday morning. It has deployed a boom to limit the spread of the oil.

A spokesperson for the Coast Guard said on Sunday morning: “We anticipate the fuel has thinned and spread out overnight and we are working today to aggressively contain the slick and remove as much as possible from the marine environment.”

The Coast Guard also said on Sunday that the ship had released no further fuel. “We believe the situation will remain stable,” said the spokesperson.

The ship’s owner contracted the Western Canada Marine Response Corporation (WCMRC) to respond to the incident, under the leadership of the Coast Guard.
