DP World teams with Rumo for new $500m grain and fertiliser terminal at Brazil’s Santos port

Dubai-based terminal operator DP World has partnered up with Brazilian railway operator Rumo to build a grain and fertilizer terminal at the Port of Santos in Brazil.

The new terminal, estimated to cost about $500m, will handle 9m tonnes of grains and 3.5m tonnes of fertilizers a year. Construction is expected to take 30 months, with no impact on container handling operations, DP World said.

The project will be financed through a combination of Rumo’s resources, loans, and potential strategic partnerships. A 30-year deal will see DP World provide the terminal area on the left bank of the port to Rumo while assuming responsibility for port operations and services.

The new terminal will mark DP World’s fourth round of investment since operations began in Brazil in 2013. The company spent $35m on expanding and modernising its facilities last year, including the increase in container handling capacity from 1.2m teu to 1.4m teu. The port itself has seen record cargo movements in January, handling 11.9m tonnes of cargo, of which bulk solids, such as sugar and soy, accounted for 5m tonnes, up 13.9% compared to the same period in 2023.

“This new terminal will not only bolster trade capabilities but also create long-term value for our customers and stakeholders,” said Fabio Siccherino, CEO of DP World Santos.
