Engie and EDP venture reveals Australian offshore wind scheme

Ocean Winds, a joint venture between France’s Engie and Portuguese electric utilities company EDP, has applied to develop offshore wind projects off the coast of Victoria, Australia.

The joint venture is looking to build three wind farms totalling close to 4 GW in the Gippsland area declared as Australia’s first offshore wind zone.

The duo joins a raft of other international players eyeing the Australian offshore wind sector including Denmark’s Ørsted, UK-based SSE Renewables, and Norway’s Equinor.

The State of Victoria is targeting at least 2 GW of offshore generation capacity by 2032, 4 GW by 2035 and 9 GW by 2040.

Ocean Winds, with 1.5 GW of renewable power generation in operation, is aiming to reach 5 GW to 7GW of functional generation by 2025, including the 950 MW Moray East wind farm in the UK.
