Hapag-Lloyd to roll out Starlink across entire fleet

Germany’s Hapag-Lloyd, the world’s fifth largest liner, is set to roll out Starlink satellite internet technology across its fleet. This strategic decision comes after a successful pilot phase.

Since May, crewmembers aboard four pilot vessels have had the opportunity to test the Starlink technology. The feedback from these trials has been very positive.

“The high-speed satellite Internet has revolutionized communication for seafarers, enabling seamless video calls and streaming services,” the German carrier stated in a release entitled ‘Seafaring in the digital age’.

Elon Musk’s Starlink satellite network offers a bandwidth of up to 250 megabits per second, facilitating not only private use but also enabling Hapag-Lloyd to conduct remote maintenance and vessel inspections.

Hapag-Lloyd was also one of the first carriers to commit to equipping its entire dry box fleet with smart devices as it undergoes a rapid digital evolution in operations.

Many of the world’s largest shipping lines and managers have been trialling and raving about Starlink this year.
