Lavinia bulker damaged in dramatic conveyor belt collapse

Investigations are proceeding into how a conveyor belt collapsed yesterday at the port of Patillos in northern Chile injuring one port worker and damaging the Leonidas, a two-year-old, 63,000 dwt bulker belonging to Greece’s Lavinia Corporation.

The accident, caught on video, happened while the Leonidas was loading a shipment of salt. Much of the collapsed conveyor belt is still on the deck of the ship and strewn along the quayside. Taking the debris off the ship will be a delicate operation likely taking a few days, local authorities said.
