Maybulk sells kamsarmax to Tokyo Century

Malaysian Bulk Carriers (Maybulk) has offloaded its 2018-built kamsarmax to Japanese buyers for around $30.1m.

The Petaling Jaya-headquartered firm said its unit Kekal Shipping sealed a deal for the sale of 82,100 dwt Alam Kekal with financial services company Tokyo Century Corp.

Brokers earlier reported the Oshima-built ship going for $31.8m to an undisclosed owner.

Maybulk said in a Bursa Malaysia filing that the ship it ordered in 2015 is expected to change hands by November 15.

The company announced its intention to dispose of the vessel in June and later obtained its shareholders’ approval in an extraordinary general meeting in July. The move comes as part of Maybulk’s bid to diversify its revenue streams and mitigate the risk of overdependence on its core business.

In its sale proposal, the company said it plans to utilise the sale proceeds of Alam Kekal to finance future business expansion, investments, and strategic acquisitions within the next two years.
