MSC bolsters Italian rail position

Mediterranean Shipping Co’s (MSC) increasing focus on European rail is gaining speed.

The world’s largest containerline has just formed a new company with Italy’s state-run Ferrovie dello Stato Italiane to expand the freight transport logistics network between ports in Italy and the rest of Europe.

“The collaborative effort will enable the creation of new terminal capacity based on the development of maritime intermodal traffic, to and from Italian ports, improving the quality of services and providing a competitive alternative to road transport as well as on the Italy-Northern Europe axis,” stated a release from MSC.

Last month, MSC struck a deal with New York-headquartered Global Infrastructure Partners to buy a 50% stake in Italian passenger rail operator Italo while in September MSC was selected as the winning partner to help revive Spain’s national rail freight operator Renfe Mercanias.
