MSC selected to help revive Spain’s rail freight operator

Mediterranean Shipping Co (MSC), the world’s largest container line, has beaten rivals including CMA CGM and Maersk to be selected as the winning partner to help revive Spain’s national rail freight operator Renfe Mercanias.

Renfe, Spain’s state-run rail operator, has finally chosen a private partner in a new attempt to revive its freight unit with Medlog, a logistics unit of MSC, taking a 50% stake in Renfe Mercanias.

The choice was made after more than a year of negotiations, and a selection process among more than 30 companies, from which Maersk and CMA CGM also emerged as finalists.

The Renfe decision still needs to be authorised by the Spanish government.
