MSC tipped to bid for Italian air cargo operator

Italian newspaper Il Corriere della Sera is reporting cash-rich Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC), the world’s largest containerline, is tabling a bid for Italian air cargo operator AlisCargo.

Milan-based AlisCargo operates four Boeing 777-200ER P2F aircraft, and crucially for MSC, it has an air operator certificate (AOC), something MSC is keen to get following the launch last September of MSC Air Cargo, the company’s move into airfreight. In the past, MSC has also bid for ITA Airways, the rebranded Alitalia.

Other top lines such as CMA CGM and Maersk have created air cargo divisions during container shipping’s recent record earnings period.
