New York awards contracts for three offshore wind projects

New York has awarded conditional contracts for three offshore wind projects as part of the largest state-level investment in renewable energy in US history.

In the most competitive offshore wind solicitation in the US, the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority selected three new offshore wind projects totalling 4,032 MW of clean energy which is expected to displace over 7m metric tons of CO2 annually.

Additionally, the awarded projects will bring more than $15bn in anticipated in-state spending and create more than 4,200 jobs across Long Island, New York City, and the Capital Region over the 25-year lifespan of the projects.

The three offshore wind projects include the 1,404 MW Attentive Energy One developed by TotalEnergies, Rise Light & Power, and Corio Generation; the 1,314 MW Community Offshore Wind developed by RWE Offshore Renewables and National Grid Ventures; and the 1,314 MW Excelsior Wind developed by Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners’s Vineyard Offshore.

New York is also committing $300 million to the development of offshore wind component manufacturing facilities planned by GE Vernova.

Apart from the three offshore wind projects, New York Governor Kathy Hochul announced conditional awards for 22 land-based renewable energy projects. The 25 projects will deliver 6.4 GW of clean energy in total, enough to power 2.6m New York homes and deliver approximately 12% of the state’s electricity needs once completed.

“New York continues to set the pace for our nation’s transition to clean energy. Today, we are taking action to keep New York’s climate goals within reach, demonstrating to the nation how to recalibrate in the wake of global economic challenges while driving us toward a greener and more prosperous future for generations to come,” Governor Hochul said.
