NYK sends its fleet of Moss-type gas carriers in for refurbishment

Nippon Yusen Kaisha (NYK) is carrying out a major refurbishment of its ageing fleet of Moss-type LNG carriers.

The Japanese shipowner is working with compatriots Namura Shipbuilding and Sasebo Heavy Industries to replace the main propulsion on the steam turbine–driven ships to LNG dual-fuel diesel engines.

Moss-type LNG ships feature spherical gas tanks and were used in many Japanese-built LNG carriers, but these have since been superseded by membrane-type gas carriers, led by France’s GTT.
