OX2 planning development of 2.8 GW wind farm off Sweden

Stockholm-based renewable energy developer OX2 has revealed plans to develop a new offshore wind farm, named Ran, 12 kilometres off Gotland’s east coast within territorial waters.

The Ran offshore wind farm will be developed together with the Pleione energy park, which is located approximately 35 kilometres off Gotland’s east coast in Sweden’s economic zone (SEZ).

The parks are expected to have a combined installed power of approximately 2.8 GW and will be able to generate approximately 13 TWh of fossil-free energy per year, which corresponds to approximately 9% of Sweden’s current electricity use.

OX2 said that it would apply for permission from the Swedish Land and Environment Court to build and operate the Ran wind farm. In order for the permission to be granted, approval from the municipality is also required.

The consultation phase is planned to begin in September 2023, when authorities and the public are invited to receive information, provide views and engage in dialogue. The project is in an early development phase and is not included in OX2’s reported project development portfolio.

Splash reported earlier today that Landinfra Energy would be investigating the conditions for the establishment of an offshore wind farm in the Swedish economic zone and Swedish territorial waters.

The company selected nine areas along the Swedish coast estimated to have the potential for an installed capacity of between 5 and 8 GW.
