Pakistan’s prime minister urged to lift shipbreaking ban

The Pakistan Ship Breakers Association (PSBA) has called on the prime minister, Nawaz Sharif, to lift the ban on ship recycling work at Gadani.

Shipbreaking in Gadani has been on hold since a massive fire ripped through a beached FPSO at the start of the month killing at least 26 people. The final death toll from the four-day fire has yet to be revealed.

“It was the first such accident in 45 years. It was undeniably a tragic incident, but a mishap just cannot be used as an excuse to shut down an entire industry,” Mohammed Ikhlaq Memon, executive member of PSBA told a press conference yesterday.
