Petrobras appoints new CEO

Brazilian state-owned energy major Petrobras has announced the appointment of economist Roberto Castello Branco as the new CEO of the company, effectively from January 2019.

Branco will be replacing Ivan Monteiro, who is heading back to state-owned Banco do Brasil. Monteiro took over the CEO of Petrobras after the former CEO Pedro Parente resigned during a truckers’ strike in May.

Branco was a member of Petrobras’s board until 2016, and has also held executive positions at Brazil’s central bank and iron ore miner Vale.

The appointment of Roberto Castello Branco is the latest in a string of appointments by President-elect Jair Bolsonaro, who takes office on January 1, 2019.
