Samsung Heavy debuts tech to counter overboard containers

South Korean shipbuilder Samsung Heavy Industries has revealed its latest invention called Special Structure Anti-Container Loss (SSA-CL), using homegrown technology to minimise container loss incidents for ships during adverse weather conditions.

SSA-CL, which can be attached to the ship’s lashing bridge, is designed to limit the lateral movement of containers by more tightly restraining the left and right movement of containers even in bad weather situations. With its implementation, container loss rates could see a decline of up to 70%, Samsung Heavy claims. The innovation does not compromise the ship’s container capacity and is compatible with existing vessels.

Containers lost overboard have been making lots of headlines in recent years.

Liner shipping companies have been attempting to improve container safety by collaborating with governments and other stakeholders to reduce the number of containers lost at sea. Several member lines and maritime stakeholders launched the MARIN Top Tier initiative in 2021, which has already delivered data on the causes of container overboard events and how to avoid future incidents. This comprises training materials to enhance awareness of the dangers of various types of parametric rolling, as well as resources such as movies and calculators to aid in the prevention and, if necessary, management of such dangerous situations.
