Sanko Steamship set to exit shipping as last vessel put up for sale

One of the most famous names in Japanese shipowning history is readying to cease operations.

Sanko Steamship has put its last ship up for sale, the 2021-built, 82,514 dwt Sanko Hawking bulk carrier, with top management telling the Japan Maritime Daily that the company will then exit shipowning.

Sanko, founded in 1934, was the biggest shipping casualty of the 1980s. It went bust again in 2012 at a time when it controlled a fleet of around 185 vessels with its owned ships tending to sport green-coloured hulls. The company emerged from a reorganisation under court protection in December 2014.
