Seized suezmax heads to Iran

Empire Navigation’s St Nikolas suezmax is making its way to Iranian waters, having been seized by a team from the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps who abseiled onto the deck of the ship via helicopter yesterday morning.

The Greek owner has appealed to authorities in the US to help try and free the Marshall Islands-flagged tanker and its crew of a Greek and 18 Filipinos.

The ship was carrying a cargo of Iraqi oil bound for Turkey when it was hijacked yesterday.

In September last year, Empire Navigation admitted to violating US sanctions by shipping a cargo of Iranian crude oil aboard the same ship, then called Suez Rajan.

In April last year, Washington seized the tanker after it was caught transferring oil off Singapore. Following the arrest, Empire Navigation entered into a deferred prosecution agreement with the US, pledging to transport some 800,000 barrels of illicit Iranian crude to the US for seizure and forfeiture. Iran responded to the arrest by seizing two tankers in the Strait of Hormuz within the space of a week.

The Iranian navy’s “seizure of the oil tanker does not constitute hijacking; rather, it is a lawful undertaking sanctioned by a court order and corresponds to the theft of Iran’s very own oil,” Iran’s mission to the United Nations told The Associated Press yesterday in a statement.

  1. Tit for Tat
This is tough for US to remain hold supremacy thru a outdated arms or sitting ducks and his upset army personal especially in gulf now d world order is changin
Change’ is a system of the world

  2. last year US stoled the oil of this ship which was belonging to IELRAN and now Iran retaliated !!
atvleast one country should slap on US army face to wake them up and make them understand tgt world is changed !!

  3. The question is: how do we handle the situation without escalation?
    Honestly I don’t see how

  4. This whole problem over in the Red Sea and surrounding areas has been made worse by American presence.

I encourage everyone to be vigilant and keep your wits about you.

I don’t know why the whole shipping industry has been dragged into this mess.

I do agree with you all on here that the world is changing. Australia’s federal government did the right thing in keeping out of it. The war in Gaza has spread out beyond Gaza partly because of America butting in. Australia’s people are calling for a ceasefire but we are not sending troops or ships over because if WW3 breaks out we need our defence force over here to protect homeland

Try and get video evidence of any human rights breaches and anything that constitutes war crimes, genocide, torture and slavery.

Our police helicopters are flying around the area where I live and I hope they are not doing this to annoy us in my neighbourhood

  5. The war in Gaza has spread to other countries partly due to America butting in. I do not understand why the entire shipping industry has been dragged into it.

I totally agree with you all. I am from Australia and at this point in time my country’s government has not sent our defence force over. If WW3 breaks out we will need them here to protect Country.

Keep your wits about you and if you are able to get videos of any war crimes, genocide, slavery and human rights violations and send them to Human Rights Watch hrw.org and Amnesty International

  6. The US and indeed the UK are on the side of righteousness and will support the victims of wrong. In this case the wrong uns are the backward arabs who have hatred and killing in their genes and will ever do so.

The US and UK governments should be applauded in their stance -not vilified.

  7. Yes. They are trying to help however it seems to have backfired on them unfortunately. The Gaza Strip has been disputed territory for thousands of years now and we current day citizens of the world possibly wouldn’t know who the original inhabitants of the Gaza Strip were. Me as a Westerner am not willing to even try and guess nor speculate on who the original occupants of Gaza were simply because I don’t know and I don’t want to put my foot in it like Donald Trump unfortunately did.

I just do not know why on earth the shipping industry was dragged into it I am guessing it because a ship was arrested by a country and then it just went on from there and now the shipping industry has been dragged into it
