Swedish 1.5 GW wind project moves ahead

Stockholm-based developer OX2 and Ikea owner Ingka Investments are pressing ahead with their Triton offshore wind farm in Sweden after the County Administrative Board of Skåne said the project can get permission to be built according to the Act on Sweden’s exclusive economic zone.

Last year, OX2 applied for a concession to connect Triton to the general grid and if the government gives final approval, construction could start in 2027, with power delivered before 2030. The up to 1.5 GW wind farm is planned to be located some 23 km off the coast of Skåne and could cover about half of the electricity consumption of Sweden’s southernmost county.

“We look forward to realising this project and continuing to cooperate with local stakeholders. We are working in parallel to secure cable connection to the grid as well as signing agreements with suppliers to be able to start as soon as all permits are in place,” said Emelie Zakrisson, head of OX2 offshore wind development in Sweden.

Triton is one of three projects that OX2 is developing together with Ingka Investments in Sweden. The other two are Galene on the west coast, which was recently approved by the government, and Aurora between the islands of Gotland and Öland. All three projects will be decided by the Swedish government and have the potential to produce a total of up to 30 TWh annually.
