Swedish vertical axis floating wind turbine developer targets Japanese market

Swedish energy-tech company SeaTwirl has teamed up with Sumitomo Corporation Power & Mobility Co to bring its vertical-axis offshore floating wind turbine into the Japanese market.

Under a memorandum of understanding, Sumitomo subsidiary will be in charge of identifying, marketing, negotiating, and contracting the potential clients.

Due to Japan’s limited shallow-water sites where bottom-fixed offshore wind turbines can be installed, there is a strong domestic demand for practical floating offshore wind turbines that can be installed in deepwater further from shore.

SeaTwirl said its vertical-axis wind turbine is well suited for the conditions in the Japanese offshore environment with its robust and flexible design and high serviceability.

“SeaTwirl has great experience within vertical-axis offshore floating wind turbines after more than ten years’ in the business and we are excited to see that the Japanese market is now starting to move,” remarked Peter Laurits, head of global business development.

SeaTwirl has also recently made news in partnership with UK-based offshore energy storage specialist Verlume with aims to decarbonise offshore oil and gas assets using renewable power and seabed-based energy storage and intelligent energy management.
